Automatic Door Not Opening? 8 Common Causes and Fixes

When an automatic door or handicap door opener stops working, customers get stuck outside and the entrance stops being accessible. Many problems have simple causes. Here are the most common ones we see in Toronto and GTA buildings, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call a technician.
1. Dirty or blocked sensor
Sliding doors open when a motion sensor sees someone. Dirt, snow, frost, signs or decorations in front of the sensor can stop it working. Gently wipe the sensor cover and remove anything blocking its view.
2. Sensor knocked out of alignment
A sensor that has been bumped or re-angled may look at the wrong spot, so the door opens late, opens randomly or does not open at all. Re-aiming needs to be done carefully because the same sensors keep the door from closing on people.
3. Mode switch set to the wrong position
Many automatic doors have a key or rotary switch for automatic, one-way, hold-open and off. Staff sometimes change it at closing. Check that it is set back to automatic.
4. Power or breaker problem
If nothing lights up or hums, check whether the door's breaker has tripped. If it keeps tripping, stop resetting it and call a technician.
5. Dead push button or wireless transmitter
Handicap push buttons are often wireless and run on batteries. A dead battery is one of the most common reasons an accessible door stops opening.
6. Debris in the track or a damaged floor guide
Gravel, salt and ice in the bottom track of a sliding door can jam it. Clear the track with the power off. A bent floor guide or track needs a repair.
7. Worn belt, rollers or gears
Grinding, jerky movement or a door that opens part way usually means worn drive parts. These should be replaced before the operator fails completely.
8. Door or hinge problem, not the operator
On swing doors, a sagging door or worn hinge can make the operator strain and stop. The fix is in the door, not the motor.
When to call a technician
The door closes on people or does not stop when someone is in the way. Turn it off and call right away.
The breaker keeps tripping or you smell burning.
The door makes grinding noises or moves unevenly.
Simple checks did not fix it, or it is your only accessible entrance.
